How to Measure Your Ring Size

The right ring size matters for comfort, secure wear and a smooth proposal experience. You can estimate a size at home, but a professional measurement at a jeweller remains the most reliable option.
Measuring a ring you already own
Choose a ring that fits the same finger comfortably and measure its inside diameter from edge to edge in millimetres. A calliper is more accurate than a ruler. Measure only the open interior, without including the metal edges.
Compare the diameter with a ring-size chart and keep the millimetre measurement in your notes. Naming conventions can differ between sizing systems, while the measured diameter provides a useful reference.
When should you measure your finger?
Finger size can change temporarily with temperature, activity and salt intake. Measure around the middle of the day when your hands are at a normal temperature, rather than when they are unusually cold or swollen.
- Allow enough room for the ring to pass over the knuckle.
- Remember that narrow and wide bands can feel different in the same size.
- If you fall between sizes, discuss the width and shape of the design with your jeweller.
A practical approach for a surprise ring
Borrowing a ring your partner wears on the same finger is one of the safest approaches. If you cannot bring it to the store, carefully measure its inside diameter or trace the inner circle on paper.
Not every design can be resized in the same way. Stone settings, band shape and metal construction all affect what is possible, so ask about the specific design before purchasing.
