Understanding the Four Cs of Diamonds

Diamond characteristics are commonly described through the Four Cs: cut, carat, colour and clarity. They should be considered together. Choosing the highest grade in every category is not the only valid approach for every purpose or budget.
Cut
Cut describes a diamond's proportions and how it returns light. It is different from carat weight. Well-balanced proportions play a major role in the stone's brightness and sparkle.
Carat
Carat is a unit of weight, not a direct measurement of visible size. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can appear different in size depending on their proportions and setting.
Colour and clarity
Colour grades describe how close a diamond appears to colourless on a standard scale. Clarity concerns natural internal characteristics and surface marks visible under magnification.
Some clarity characteristics may not be noticeable to the unaided eye. It helps to view the stone in lighting close to daylight and alongside the setting, rather than considering the report alone.
How should the Four Cs be balanced?
Set priorities according to how the piece will be worn and your budget. If sparkle matters most, focus on cut; if you want a particular visible size, consider the balance between carat and proportions. Before purchasing, ask exactly what documentation is provided and which organisation issued the report.
